Do You Feel Financially #LifeReady

Do You Feel Financially #LifeReady

Being a grown up is hard.

When I was a child, I couldn’t wait to grow up. In my mind it meant that I could do whatever I want and eat ALL THE CHOCOLATE. I didn’t realize that it also meant learning to pay bills, live within your means and realizing just because you could do something doesn’t always mean you should. Being a grown up is definitely not as cool as I hoped it would be.

Thankfully, these days I am in a place where I don’t have to worry so much about the financial side of things. We work very hard to live within our means and save for the future. It wasn’t always that way, though.

You see, I grew up poor. I never had extra money burning a hole in my pocket. Once I got my first job I went a bit crazy. I bought new shoes, new clothes, new everything. Next thing I knew, I had a credit card balance that I couldn’t pay off. I was living beyond my means. I would love to tell you that I recognized that and stopped immediately but I didn’t. It took me a few years to figure out that if I kept going how I was going that I be in a hole I couldn’t get out of. Finally I said “Enough!” and buckled down to pay it off. It was not as easy as it would have been had I just not overspent in the first place.

Another lesson I had to learn was about saving for the future. None of my family circle had ever had a retirement savings plan (that I know of). I had no idea that I should be saving or how much. Thankfully I got some great coaching and learned that starting to save early was the way to go. I started socking away money in a registered retirement account early before I got married and had Evan. These days, I need to get back on that bandwagon. As an entrepreneur it is hard to remember to take that money out and put it into my retirement account.

I think being #LifeReady is a journey. Sometimes you are rocking it and sometimes you need to work on things. Wonder how ready you are? Check out the Manulife #LifeReady Quiz.

Are You #Life Ready

My Tips for Being More #LifeReady:

  • Save for big purchases or events. We travel a lot but we always make sure that we save enough money to go before we leave.
  • Make a budget for expenditures (especially big ones). The one that is coming up that sends many into a tailspin….Christmas!
  • Don’t forget to pay yourself by saving for retirement.
  • Make sure to have an emergency fund for when life throws you a curve ball.
