This Old Dog is Learning New Tricks

This Old Dog is Learning New Tricks

This summer has been an interesting one. I had grand hopes (as I always do) of getting out and seeing more of Alberta during Summer Vacation. We did visit Stettler to ride the Steam Train and visited the Ellis Bird Farm but that was about it. Instead, I’ve been learning new tricks.

“New tricks?”, you say. Yep. In just a few short days I will become a business owner. While I knew some of what that meant, I didn’t realize everything that would entail and how much I would have to learn.

Some of the things I’ve done/learned the last few weeks:

  • Getting business insurance
  • Researching, choosing and signing up for a credit card machine
  • Meeting vendors and placing orders for store inventory
  • Meeting the ladies that work in the store
  • Opening a new business bank account
  • Apply for a new business credit card
  • Submit credit applications for vendors
  • Change my GST number to my new business
  • Learning about creating vignettes in the store and styling for marketing as opposed to how you would decorate your home

and on and on.

Oh and during all that, we had our annual Canal Days festivities in our lake neighbourhood. I volunteered to put on our market and it was the biggest one yet with 19 vendors. We finished off the day of fun with Dewey’s band playing the dance. (That is them in the pic above with their sound guy, George)

It is our favourite weekend of the whole year because it brings together our happy place, Dewey’s passion and so many of our favourite people. This year didn’t disappoint. PLUS, Dewey finally got his neck brace taken off. That was a LONG 3 months!

You may have noticed I haven’t updated the blog as much lately either. I’m working to get to a place of balance between learning new stuff, keeping up with family obligations and keeping the blog going as well. I’m hoping that as we move forward it will get easier. Until then, know that I am still planning to keep the doors open here…I just need a bit of time to find my footing.

Merry - Yes happy to see the new store. I met some of your extended family, the CORBIEL FAMILY, in Phoenix (Ray, Ramona, Vanessa, et al). Are they still hunkering around Calgary? Haven't seen them in AZ for awhile. Nice to meet you. From Jano Nightingale, now of San Diego, Ca.I also have a gardening FB page - JANO'S GARDEN. Nice to meet you!
